About this pattern

Personalise a plain tote with an embroidered fruit and vegetable motif with Susie John's tutorial.

We’re always being encouraged to eat our five-a-day, and find alternatives to single-use plastic bags – so this practical project ticks the box for both! The pun-tastic design makes the most of split stitch, a useful basic that can be used for embroidering lines, and neatly filling in shapes, such as the rainbow of produce on the front of this tote.

Essentials

  • Fabric: unbleached cotton calico, 50cm x 115cm; medium-weight cotton, 34cm x 84cm
  • Cotton herringbone tape, 25mm x 1.4m
  • Six-stranded embroidery thread: cream, yellow, four shades of green, fuchsia pink, bright red, maroon, dark plum, purple, three shades of beige, grey, brown, white
  • Erasable pen
  • Embroidery needle
  • Embroidery hoop
